What is the new use classes order?
Previously, the use classes order dictated what buildings could be used for and required planning permission to change the use. However, the new Use Classes Order 2020 has streamlined the process and removed unnecessary red tape. The order has replaced former use classes A1, A2, A3, B1, B2, D1, and D2 with a new Use Class E, which includes a vast range of different business types.
Under the new Use Class E, you can now change the use of your building without planning permission, as long as there are no planning conditions directly mentioning the use class. This means that anything from a bank to a bowling alley can be covered by Class E. However, external structural changes still require permission.
