Design in Details
The Rochdale development proposes the regeneration of the former Wheatsheaf Shopping Centre into a new mixed-use town-centre neighbourhood. The scheme aims to replace the existing inward-facing retail centre with a more open, active and connected place that supports new homes, commercial uses, public spaces and improved movement through the heart of Rochdale.
Key features include new residential accommodation, active ground-floor frontages, landscaped public realm and improved pedestrian connections between Yorkshire Street, Baillie Street and surrounding town-centre routes. The proposal also introduces a stronger relationship between buildings, streets and public spaces, helping to create a safer, more welcoming and more accessible environment.

Sustainable Town-Centre Living and Long-Term Place Value
Muse Architects’ emerging vision for the Rochdale development places sustainability and long-term place value at the centre of the proposal. The scheme makes efficient use of a brownfield town-centre site, supports walking, cycling and public transport, and includes opportunities for green roofs, amenity spaces, SuDS and low-carbon design measures. Together, these features will help create a vibrant, connected and future-focused destination for Rochdale.
Muse Architects also seeks to strengthen Rochdale’s town-centre identity by creating a place that feels active, welcoming and usable throughout the day. By combining new homes, commercial spaces, public areas and improved pedestrian routes, the proposal supports local businesses, encourages footfall and helps bring new life to a key site within the town centre.
