The Alfurqan Centre in Manchester entrusted Muse Architects to enhance its facilities within spatial constraints. Guiding the planning application with Manchester City Council, our focus was to elevate the mosque’s amenities and capacity. The approved proposal encompasses a detailed second-floor extension housing a prayer hall and educational spaces, culminating after a rigorous planning process resulting in approval in June 2021. Revamping ground and lower ground levels, the design prioritises improved accessibility with new entrances, lifts, stairs, and a covered courtyard. Notably, the expanded ground floor accentuates the main prayer hall, introduces a youth centre, kitchen, and disabled-friendly amenities. Situated in Rusholme, the Alfurqan Centre serves as a vital hub in Manchester’s dynamic landscape, catering to a densely populated Muslim community. It stands as a cultural beacon, adapting to evolving needs while honouring the city’s rich diversity and heritage.
